“You are what you eat.”
I imagine we have all heard those words before, but honestly, who of us have thought of them in terms of infertility? We often hear this saying and don’t give it much notice, but truth is, this phrase could not be more accurate. Every cell in our body, every hormone, every enzyme all have linkage back to the nutrients we take in.
Many do not realize the impact nutritional imbalances can have on fertility. Without proper vitamin supplementation through the foods that we eat, problems such as ovulation issues, hormonal imbalances, poor egg health, and low sperm count can arise. Unfortunately, these problems simply make conception harder and harder to come by – further distancing us from our wishes for parenthood – of having a baby.
So, you are probably sitting there right now wondering what the heck you can do about this. But don’t worry, there is a way! Sure, diet change to include nutrient, vitamin-rich foods would be a great option (actually of up-most importance and highly recommended!), but an exceptional option for nutritional enhancement is that of prenatal multivitamins. Multivitamins are often looked over in regards to treating infertility, but studies have shown that not only will these essential vitamins enrich your life by making you stronger and more energetic, but they will increase your bodies chances of ovulating by 40%! Specifically, a study at Harvard Medical School, involving over 18,000 woman, has shown that multivitamins (folate, especially) can immensely improve chances of getting pregnant.
Now, you may be thinking to yourself: “There are so many! How will I know which is best for me?” Well, one of the prenatal multivitamins I would most recommend is “Thorne Prenatal Basic”. This specific multivitamin includes ideal amounts of iron as well as bioactive forms of folate to keep our bodies at healthy levels. Often the question arises: “What do these minerals actually contribute too? Why are they so important?” Well, deficiencies in iron have been proven to cause anovulation (lack of ovulation) and also to weaken overall egg health. Keeping iron levels at consistent, healthy levels will only improve your chances for conception. Similarly, folate (or commonly regarded to as folic acid) plays a major part in fertility. Folic acid is perhaps the most popularly used vitamin supplement for pregnancy (and we shouldn’t be surprised). Folate not only strengthens cells, but provides natural protection against birth defects such as neural tube defects, cleft-lip, heart defects, limb abnormalities, and urinary tract aberrations from occurring during embryotic development. Folic acid and multivitamins in general, act as a type of “insurance policy,” protecting your future baby and allowing it to be as healthy as possible.
Conclusively, it is quite possible that, before this article, you had never considered multivitamins to have such importance (I’ve been there!). But I’m here to tell you, it’s worth it; and who knows, magical things can happen! Perhaps they will change your life: one vitamin at a time!
